Hydrant Flushing Maintains High-Quality Water
CFU will begin the semi-annual process of flushing water hydrants this spring as weather permits. Water Utility crews typically start at the beginning of April but it can be as early as March if weather allows.
Hydrant flushing is one form of preventative maintenance the Water Utility uses to provide the highest quality water possible.
Hydrant valves are opened and closed to control the flow of water and flush the water main of sediment.
As a result of this process water to area homes may be temporarily discolored. The discoloration is due to silt and air in the lines and does not affect the safety of the water. However we recommend residents avoid doing laundry when hydrants are being flushed nearby.
If you experience discolored water allow faucets to run for a few minutes to flush the lines in your home.
Hydrants are flushed Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
To learn when hydrant flushing is scheduled in your neighborhood check cfu.net/hydrants throughout the season.
If clothes are washed in discolored water keep them wet and call CFU at 319-268-5332 to get a special cleaning agent at no charge.
In Cedar Falls and most other cities property owners own the service line that runs from the water main to their homes and businesses. This includes the water service line the connection at the water main the shut-off valve near the property line (curb stop) and the shut-off valve inside the building near the meter.
