What You Can Do to Save Energy

There are steps you can take to reduce energy usage and save money this heating season. 

CFU offers cost-sharing rebates to help customers install energy-efficient equipment and make insulation and other thermal envelope improvements. Changes in your behavior can also make a difference.

Use a programmable thermostat to turn the temperature down when you are away from home or asleep. CFU offers a 100% cost-sharing rebate up to $150 for smart WiFi enabled thermostats that can do this automatically. 

Wash clothes with cold water to reduce energy used to make hot water.

Let the sun work for you. Keep curtains and blinds open on sunny winter days especially on the south side of your home. Closed curtains can also double as insulators at night.

Sign up for Budget Billing

Customers can sign up for CFU’s budget billing plan to level out the seasonal ups and downs of heating and cooling costs. 

This is accomplished by dividing a customer's estimated annual utility charge into 12 equal payments.

Smart Thermostat Settings

According to the Department of Energy you can save as much as 5% a year on heating and cooling by simply adjusting your thermostat five degrees from its normal setting for eight hours a day when away from home or sleeping. 

The Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 68 degrees. Adjust your thermostat to a lower temperature to save energy and money. Higher temperatures may provide comfort but there is additional cost.
